sweet, sweet summer

I’ve spent a good part of the summer faffing about Europe. I realize that’s not a word, but it’s the closest approximation of a word to define what I was doing. Faffing. There was a weekend in London, a night in Normandy, a week in Bavaria, a couple of days in Ile-de-Ré, and a wedding in the Pyrenées. But what I’ve been anticipating is August. A couple of quiet weeks in an empty Paris, and then the sea air, the lobsters, the boatrides–we’re off to Maine on Friday. And yet I can’t help but wax nostalgic about the faffing–about how in one month I saw several major cities, a couple of mountain ranges and a couple of coastlines. The furthest we drove was 8 hours, the least 3 and yet, every place I’ve been this summer was so dramatically different. Sometimes I forget what a blessing and an opportunity living on the continent can be.

And sometimes I forget to travel just to travel. This coming year will be more full of travel then ever, but travel for auditions, for lessons, for opportunities. Hopefully I won’t forget to travel just to travel. Because that would be a pity.

But in the meantime, I’ll tease you with ridiculous pictures of French villages and Bavarian mountains and the most amazing discovery I’ve made all summer, the delicious wonder that is käsespaetzle. Potato dumpling noodles cut straight into a pot of boiling water, strained, doused with cheese and fried onions. This is German macaroni and cheese on crack.

In a million years, I never thought I’d like Germany as much as I do after my last trip. I’m no longer dreading that more-than-likely 8 out of my next 10 trips will be there. It’s a good place, with lots of beer and cute stationary and scenic rolling hills covered in mist. Oki, maybe just on the day I was there, but if every day looked like (see below), then it’s worth exploring. Oh, and we need to talk some point about the abundance of breathtaking, world class opera. And naked people in those operas.

In the meantime, I’m off to consume significant amounts of lobster (turns out the prices are down again this year), roadtrip to Quebec, see friends and be merry. I may be an adult now, but my mind still functions in school years, so I’ll see you a la rentrée with new endeavours and pictures of new, fun places.
